Flavours of the Month: March 2014...

LOOKS:

The League of Gentlemen (DVD commentaries)

Gravity (Blu-Ray)
- it's definitely not a horror film, but it's the scariest movie I've seen in years. An astonishing technical and directorial achievement that features a gripping central performance by Bullock.

8MM - apparently screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en) disowned the movie after it was watered down and had the tone somewhat lightened, but even still, it's a pretty grim thriller that's simultaneously quite compelling. Part of that post-Se7en vibe in 90s filmmaking where everything got very dark and brooding (also see End of Days).

True Detective - familiar elements given a unique spin. A superb piece of dramatic work with two exceptional lead performances at the heart of it. Lyrical, poetic, and exceedingly dark. An iconic piece of television drama. Let's hope they can recapture that same spirit with a brand new cast and storyline for season two.

What Have You Done To Solange? (Massimo Dallamano, 1972) DVD Review

Find more giallo reviews here.

“I want to Enrico, as much as you want to, but not like this.” Massimo Dallamano's What Have You Done To Solange? is the first entry in a thematic trilogy of 'school girls in peril' films, and was followed by What Have They Done To Your Daughters? (1974), and Trauma (1978, aka Rings of Fear). Loosely based on Edgar Wallace's novel “The Clue of the New Pin”, it has weathered the ravages of time to remain one of the finest examples of giallo film-making.

"Sleb" novelisation update...

A quick update on the progress thus far with my current project - writing a Kindle eBook novelisation of my screenplay "Sleb".

Naturally, switching from one form and style of writing to another was tricky to begin with. Progress was initially slow - or perhaps it was more a case of it feeling that way. I've been able to hit my daily word count target from the get-go, which is pleasing, but at the start it was more of a struggle to get there.

Triple Bill Mini Musings: Space, Marriage, and Hangovers...

Gravity:
What's it about?
Alfonso Cuarón's awards-gobbling sci-fi about an astronaut stranded in space after a deadly encounter when space debris destroys their shuttle.
Who would I recognise in it?
Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Ed Harris (voice).
Great/Good/Alright/Shite?
Cuarón is known for his long takes, and Gravity is certainly a pinnacle of this approach. The opening shot is roughly twelve minutes long and goes from the calm tranquillity of space to a chaotic disaster with such sure-footed direction that it's hard to comprehend the sheer effort that went into producing it. Films have a usual pattern of editing - you expect the film to cut to a different angle sooner or later and at regular intervals, and so there's a sense of safety and artifice there for the viewer. However, when a take lasts longer than expecting without cutting - and continues on, and on, and on - the viewer begins to believe the events are real and get wrapped-up in them. As such, Gravity is one of the scariest thrill rides out there - a proper bum clencher - it's sweaty palms time in a big way. Visually the film is stunning, but the dialogue can be a bit too functional and plain at times, however the story itself is well realised, combining edge-of-your-seat action and peril, with broader themes of birth, life, death, and re-birth. Great.
